Tamil nadu and Pondicherry brace for very
heavy rains today following a low
pressure over Bay of Bengal in fact
Northeast Monsoon has set in the Met has
forecast very heavy rains today across
the state and extremely heavy rains just
in the city of Chennai tomorrow and a
joining districts of Chennai as well so
it is a rain holiday as far as schools
and colleges in Chennai are concerned
and IT companies Vedant have been advised
to switch to work from home that’s right
in fact coimbatore has declared half a day
holiday for schools today as well last
year Chennai and Thoothukudi were ravaged by
floods due to unprecedented rains in
fact a similar situation is expected
this year as well given the fact that
there’s an intense rain warning that has
been issued particularly for the suburbs
it rained overnight
a bit but what’s the situation as per 15/10/2024
how is Chennai preparing for the intense rain
Chennai was pounded by heavy
rainfall nearly 6 cm rain past midnight
but the Saving Grace is there was a gap
for the last 3 to 4 hours not much of
rain and we come to you from the CIT
Colony area where in December last year
through neck deep Waters
but now the road is clear there’s
not no stagnation or inundation at all
but the problem is in the link roads
like this to my left where people wait
through nearly ankle deep Waters that’s
because in many pockets like this the
storm water drains work is not completed
drain work is still underway and
you can see people waiting
through ankle deep Waters and to my
right is an incomplete Channel work
because of which there is stagnation
Major challenge DMK had promised
this is one major challenge although
the ruling DMK had promised to get this
done in one year it’s more than 2 years
and still in many areas the work is not
complete and they point out two reasons
one is uh a genuine delay two in many
areas the shenai Metro Rail Project is
also clashing and that is one more
bottleneck they say but as of now in
Chennai in most SPS there are no reports
of inundation on the roads except
chronic low-lying Pockets where even for
a moderate rainfall there would be water
authorities hope if this continues if
the is intermittent pounding of rains
like this then they will not be flooding
at all in terms of preparedness they
have deployed more than 300 boats in
low-lying Pockets they’ve assigned one
senior bureaucrat for every Zone in
Chennai they’ve also earmarked more than
15 relief centers just in case if this
requires evacuation and uh in terms of
equipment they say they have all
required Machinery in terms of tree
cutters in terms of deep suckers in
terms of diesel missions that’s the case
the government claims is in other
districts as well at joining districts
and in other parts of Tamil Nadu that
the state is well prepared the worry is
the Met forast anywhere around 40 cm
rain in the next few days and in one day
alone either today or tomorrow there
could be 20 cm rain will the storm water
drains will the city or the state be
able to handle in most of these areas
that’s the big challenge but authorities
say they well prepared this time
